Old Portsmouth contains several sallyports (which are openings in the fortifications). One such original sallyport was closed when the Point Barracks were built in about 1850. This was opened by the city council in the 1960s.
If you stand looking at the Sallyport information panel you'll see a statue in front of you that was presented to the City of Portsmouth by the Sea Trek Foundation. It provides a permanent legacy to the commitment of the Europeans who courageously left their native lands to create a new home in America.
The original Sallyport was at the southern end of 18 Gun Battery, next to the moat protecting King James’ Gate. It was closed when houses were demolished to make way for Point Barracks.
Through the ages the people of Portsmouth have enjoyed the views and access to the beach from the sallyports.
The sallyport called The King’s Stairs is situated near the Square Tower and gave entry from the sea directly into Point. It was used by naval officers landing in Old Portsmouth.
