Food and Drink
Portsmouth is a foodie paradise, offering top-quality cuisine from across the world. Whether you want fancy French fayre, hearty pub grub or on-trend street food, you’re sure to find something to suit. We’ve got the big-name restaurants you know and love, as well as an absolute wealth of independent places offering quality menus that take inspiration from all corners. Whether you stay here for a couple of nights or a few months, you’re certainly not going to go hungry!
Our restaurants offer global cuisine for all tastes and budgets. Head to the big names you know and love, or try out some of the many great independents available throughout the city.
Or why not get a taste for Portsmouth’s great pubs and bars? Here you’ll find drinks from far afield or just around the corner - as well as great hospitality and a welcoming atmosphere.
If you’ve got a taste for some local ales, there’s every chance you could go and see where the magic happens. Visit the city’s microbreweries to learn about the process and take some home as a memento.
For a lunchtime stop or to get a tasty snack on the go, head to Portsmouth’s cafes and delis, where fresh food is produced on the premises daily. Or treat yourself to a cup of joe at one of the many coffee shops – which again ranges from all the big names to quirky independent selling their speciality blends.
Maybe instead you’d prefer to relax with an afternoon tea, to enjoy some delicious sandwiches and cakes, plus some tea (or even a bottle of fizz) to wash it down? If so you're in luck, with a number of tea houses, cafes and restaurants offering quality afternoon teas.
If you’re on the go or want to grab a quick treat, the city’s fast food outlets can accommodate. Or, seeing as you’re at the seafront, it’d be remiss not to get some fish and chips, or really push the boat out and get some seafood that's not your usual battered cod – freshly caught so there’s very little time between the sea and your plate.
Much of the fish you eat here will be locally sourced, as will the meat and vegetables on offer at city shops, pubs and restaurants. Find out where to get local produce for the best meals in the city, or head to the markets or visit special foodie events for the freshest food – prepared and sold by the people who grew it.
If you're vegetarian or vegan, you’ll also be well catered for. Many places have rightfully done away with just offering a few options in one corner of the menu, and instead rolled out entire veggie or vegan menus – to ensure everyone has a good selection.
