You are here: Featured Pages > Virtual Portsmouth > Dickens' Birthplace
The Charles Dickens' Birthplace Museum is a walk-in time capsule, taking visitors back in time to the era when Victorian England's favourite author was born - right here in Portsmouth.
However, being a small Victorian terraced house, it's not quite designed with social distancing in mind. For this, the museum offered private visits for household groups or bubbles last year - allowing people a better opportunity than ever before to take in the magnificent home.
Whilst there aren't yet any dates in the diary for private bookings in 2021 (watch this space!) it doesn't mean you can't get a glimpse inside the museum, or at its illustrious collection. The Charles Dickens' Birthplace Museum website contains an Activities section containing a host of puzzles with varying levels of difficulty. So whether you want to start easy with a 30-piece puzzle of the bedspread, or want to go straight in for the fiendishly difficult 300-piece Parlour puzzle, you have the option (as well as many others).
Whilst you're there, the Dickens' Birthplace Museum site has plenty of fascinating insight into the building, as well as the life and times of Dickens himself. Read through the history of the building, or discover some of the stories behind the stories.
There's also a brand new guided tour, giving you greater access than ever before to this wonderful museum. Settle in for a guided tour of Dickens' first home - which you can enjoy from the comfort of your own!
