The harbours and mud flats around Portsea Island provide a haven for birdwatching. It’s why people flock (if you’ll pardon the pun) to our shores every year with their binoculars in tow.

We have nature reserves that are designated sites of special scientific interest, being among the UK’s most important location for a host of migratory over-wintering wildfowl. Time your visit right and you’re almost certain to spot a number of Brent Geese, with the water of Langstone Harbour supporting around 30% of the UK’s entire population when they head here from Siberia.

Those aren’t all there is to see, of course, as twitchers can also spot curlew, common redshank, dunlin and black-tailed godwit – and that’s just for starters.
