Nestled on the corner of Guildhall Walk, the New Theatre Royal is a glistening gem; a place for anyone who may be looking for a laugh, a dance, some theatre or to learn.

Proudly Grade II* listed, the exquisite Victorian theatre's architecture hides history waiting to be uncovered and harbours hopes for the future. Since opening in 1856 as Landport Hall, the iconic building has evolved through many forms, brought to life with the efforts of Henry Rutley and architects Charles Phipps and Frank Matcham, opening officially as a theatre in 1884.

Lawrence Olivier, Laurel and Hardy and many other famous faces have graced its stage - which even got a mention Dickens' Nicholas Nickleby!

Though it survived two World Wars and had to constantly adapt to survive in a tumultuous landscape, the theatre met its match in 1972 when a fire broke out. The building was repaired, mostly by volunteers, but this was only ever temporary.

In 2012 the theatre closed for three years to undergo a £4.3m renovation, which restored it to its former glory. The New Theatre Royal really did rise like a phoenix from the ashes.

Today, NTR continues to work with both established household names as well as new and upcoming artists. There’s something for everyone to participate in, whether that’s watching a show, taking part in a workshop, performing, or even career opportunities - all of which cement it as a community hub in the city.

The diverse programme includes comedy; music; classic and contemporary theatre; family events; and a variety of talks and workshops. Every year, New Theatre Royal welcomes a new pantomime that is adored by everyone, regardless of age.
