You can now get across Portsmouth quickly and easily with Voi Rental e-Scooters. The city is running one of the UK's pilot schemes to test e-scooters, meaning you can hire and hop on to take short rides across Portsmouth on a pay-as-you-go basis. Rides aren't just affordable and fun, they're also environmentally friendly too.
To get started with Voi, first download the app and register with your mobile number. You can then locate an available scooter nearby using the map function in the app and activate Beginner’s mode if you’re new to e-scooters, to start off slowly while you get used to the accelerator and brakes.
Once you get to the scooter stand, scan the QR code found on the handlebar or the footpad of your chosen scooter to unlock it. Then just hop on and push off with your foot a few times to get it rolling before you use the throttle.
To end your ride head back into the app, which will then make the scooter available for someone else.
Please note, you must be at least 18 years old and hold a provisional or full driving licence to ride a Voi scooter.
You don't need to bring your bike with you to enjoy a ride around Portsmouth on two wheels. Instead, hire a bike from Voi for as long as you need - whether on a pay-as-you-ride basis or with advance bundles.
Either way, you'll get access to 360 bikes at 90 bays located right across Portsmouth. Simply drop them back off at a designated bay, or leave them in a safe place outside a bay for a small fee.
The bikes have already proved enormously popular, covering over 44,000km in their first nine months alone - with 4,108 active users across Portsmouth. Find out more about the scheme and download the app on the Voi website.
Simplify your journey with the unified Breeze App, which is free to download on Google Play (Android) or the App Store (iPhone). With the app you can plan your journey not just around Portsmouth but the whole of south Hampshire, including Southampton, Winchester and the Isle of Wight.
It will show you the quickest, cheapest and most eco-friendly options for the journey you want to take, and you can even hire Voi e-Scooters or bikes directly within the app.
Portsmouth has implemented a Clean Air Zone, to make the air cleaner for locals and visitors alike. This means certain vehicles will be charged for driving within the designated zone.
Private vehicles will not be subject to the charge. Only buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles and heavy goods vehicles that are older than Euro 6 if diesel, and Euro 4 if petrol, will be charged.
Newer, cleaner vehicles will not be charged, and there are also some specific vehicle exemptions. More information on these exemptions can be found on the Portsmouth Clean Air Zone website.
The zone runs south from Kingston Crescent all the way to Portsmouth Harbour, covering the city centre, Gunwharf Quays and large parts of Portsea.
Non-compliant taxis and private hire vehicles will be charged £10 per day to enter the zone. For HGVs, buses and coaches, the charge is £50 a day.
Portsmouth City Council has also brought in many other measures to improve air quality in the city, and not just rely on the Clean Air Zone. More information on these measures, as well as further details on the Clean Air Zone itself, can be found on the website.
