About
Tudor historian and writer Dr Phil Roberts tells the fascinating story of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey; his rise to power under Henry VIII and his drastic fall from grace leading to accusations of treason after failing to secure King Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon.
Wolsey, born into a family of successful, small businessmen who could trace their origins to Anglo-Saxon times, was ambitious and capable. He quickly rose to power. Serving first under Henry VII and then his son Henry VIII, Wolsey was Lord Chancellor of England by 1520 and the King's right-hand man. Though he reached toppling heights of success, these were quickly snuffed out by accusations of treason which led to the cardinal's spectacular fall from power.
This riveting talk will be given by author and lecturer Dr Phil Roberts. Long associated with Mary Rose Trust, Roberts has appeared regularly on BBC radio to talk about the Tudors and the British Royal Family.
This talk will be followed by a behind-the-scenes tour given by one of the museum's expert guides, exploring the Mary Rose and her collection, with access to the archive, not usually open to the public.
Refreshments will be served in the Wardroom, with access to the museum's exterior viewing balcony. There will also be a book signing with Dr Roberts, and your chance to pick up a copy of Cardinal Wolsey: For King and Country.
Tickets are £30 per person, which includes the talk and tour. Signed books are available at an additional cost. Please note, access to the Mary Rose Museum is provided for the duration of the experience only. Should you wish to visit the museum on a later date a valid ticket will be required.
