About
SailGP returns to the UK with fast and furious racing set to take place right here in Portsmouth.
The highly-anticipated Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix takes place over the weekend of 19 and 20 July - the first UK event since Season 3 back in 2022.
Witness the thrill of what has been dubbed 'the most exciting racing on water', with spectacular viewing from the elevated Race Stadium. Meanwhile a huge on-water presence is expected on The Solent as the UK’s passionate sailing fandom pack out the event.
Sail GP Portsmouth is Race 8 in a calendar of 14, with other global locations including Auckland, Dubai, New York, Sydney and Rio de Janeiro.
The Emirates GBR team
A British team will be competing in the SailGP 2024/25 season. Emirates GBR is led by the most successful Olympic sailor of all time, Sir Ben Ainslie, as CEO. The team's F50 is driven by Olympic gold medallist, Moth World Champion and America's Cup Helm, Dylan Fletcher. The crew alongside him features sailing's top talent, including Olympic gold medallists Hannah Mills and Iain Jensen, plus three-time America's Cup competitors Neil Hunter, Nick Hutton and Luke Parkinson. The team is completed by 18-year-old Kai Hickley, a development sailor from the Athena Pathway programme.
Emirates GBR was a formidable force in the last SailGP season, winning three separate events as well as topping the Impact League for its dedication to climate education, sustainability and inclusivity.
What is Sail GP?
Sail GP offers adrenaline-fueled races, legendary global locations, rival national teams and record-breaking speeds. World-class athletes will take to the water in flying boats that can potentially reach over 54 knots (100km/h).
Races involve 12 identical boats racing around a short course (located close to shore for great viewing opportunities), reaching incredible speeds.
Competition is fierce with some of the world's best athletes competing to take the title - not to mention the $7 million USD prize at stake.
