Summer half term events in Portsmouth

The summer holidays are always jam packed with events for the whole family, with longer days and warmer weather bringing with it a host of outdoor things to see and do, as well as all the typical events at museums, attractions and other indoor locations.

This year is no exception, and the bank holiday weekend that kicks off half term offers something that's sure to suit any age or budget.

So if you've got some time off and are looking to escape to the coast, there'll be plenty of things to see and do in Portsmouth over the week ahead.

Travelling with the kids? Keep them entertained with craft activities, a silent disco, and even a pantomime!

Portsmouth Comic Con returns to the Guildhall on 3 and 4 June, bringing with it all the big names and excellent panels you'd expect from the largest family-friendly event of its kind on the South Coast. This year there's a special focus on the world of Doctor Who, and will feature live appearances from the 5th and 6th Doctors - Peter Davison and Colin Baker. Elsewhere you can enjoy panel discussions, interactive displays and, of course, cosplay fun.

"Pantomime is just for Christmas." Oh no it isn't! At the New Theatre Royal this May the whole family can enjoy a panto-style production of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, replete with everything you'd expect from such a show: high energy choreography, loveable characters, colourful costumes and an opportunity for the audience to meet the characters after the show.

Over at Groundlings Theatre, meanwhile, you'll find the return of its hugely popular Silent Disco. Three channels of music mean there's something for all ages (including the adults), so you can dance around and have fun to all your favourites. The school holidays have never been so quiet!

Boathouse 4, inside Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, has a selection of activities for kids right across the half term week. There's badge making, a treasure hunt, and even the chance to design your own pirate flag. What's more, many of these activities are free - as is entry to Boathouse 4, just ask for a Heritage Quarter Pass at the entrance to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard to get in.

Youngsters can learn all about the fish that call UK waters home at Blue Reef Aquarium this half term. Its Britfish event focuses specifically on our native species - many of which could be found in the wild very near the aquarium itself. As well as fun facts to discover there will be fascinating talks and an interactive quiz.

Live at the Bandstand is back for its summer season, with the opening weekend taking place on 27 and 28 May. The festivities will take place on Castle Field, with acts including The Brass Holes, Van Gosh, Alice Milburn and Creature.

Port Solent's evening car meets are back on Thursday evenings during summertime, with each new week bringing with it a different focus. This coming session is all about supercars, with the Petroleum Spirit group showcasing a host of highly modified vehicles.

If you'd prefer to browse and buy some unique items from the South's best new artists, makers and designers, don't miss the Creative Market at the Hotwalls Studios. The resident artists will be showcasing their wares, and will be joined on the parade ground by a host of other makers. Make a day of it, as the market will also have food stalls available and even some live music.

The free live music continues up at Port Solent, where its Summer Mix Tape Series continues with Brit Pop Madness. 19 Forever, It Must Be Madness, Supersonics and Blurd all perform - and don't forget the Boardwalk's many great shops, bars and restaurants you can call into whilst you're there.

At Fort Nelson you can meet Falklands veterans and hear first-hand of their experiences during the war. The event has been organised to specifically appeal to families, so the younger generations can hear about the events that took place four decades ago, to keep the stories from the war alive for years to come.
