The Commandos were the special forces of the Army in 1940, equipped and briefed to tackle daring raids such as Operation Claymore and Operation Husky, the Allied invasion of Sicily.
No. 3 Commando was the first Commando unit raised in 1940 following the withdrawal of the BEF (British Expeditionary Force) from Dunkirk. Their commanding officer, John Durnford-Slater, was the first Army Commando of the war.
