This is the largest section of the Richard Lancelyn Green Collection and to date has been the most challenging section to sort.
The Collection testifies to the worldwide interest in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes and the wide breadth of interests Conan Doyle developed through his life.
Currently around 84% of the total archive has been added to the catalogue and is available for public access.
The catalogued material includes:
Photographs, postcards, calendars, diaries, stamps, calling cards, bookmarks, greetings cards, notepaper, public houses, restaurants, hotels, tourist guides, advertising, illustrations, maps, book covers, Snoopy material, Japanese Sherlockiana, cartoons, pamphlets (fiction and non-fiction), conferences, pipe material, games and activities, etc.
From 440 auction houses and specialist and non-specialist antiquarian and other booksellers
Richard Lancelyn Green's own correspondence and working papers comprises one of the most extensive sections in the collection and provides the core of the Collection.
Tracing his friendships, contacts and acquisition of the materials leads us to a man as passionately devoted to a cause as his hero - Arthur Conan Doyle - a man who was passionate about justice, truth and the worlds of fiction and folklore.
The archive and research room is on the 2nd Floor of the Central Library in the Portsmouth History Centre.
