The character of Sherlock Holmes has featured in many items over the years, from mugs to games and plates. Here are just a few of the items to which have used this character. Many of these items are from the Richard Lancelyn Green Bequest.
Top left is a character figure doll of Lieutenant Commander Data, dressed as Sherlock Holmes, based on the character from the Star Trek Next Generation television series. Unopened and in its original packaging, the doll is accompanied by a full range of accessories including a pipe, magnifying glass and violin.
Next to this is a set of five Russian dolls. The largest on the right is Sherlock Holmes, identified by his pipe and magnifying glass, next to him, stands the slightly smaller of Watson. Next to this are two smaller unidentified characters and, on the far left, the smallest figure is a dog – presumably the hound of the Baskervilles.
Next to this is a commemorative white china side plate. In the centre of which is a tan circle with a profiled silhouette of Sherlock Holmes complete with deerstalker and pipe. “The Sherlock Holmes Hotel” is printed in black capital letters around the bottom of the image.
The next item is a Sherlock Holmes video game and next to this is an Italian edition of the Sherlock Holmes’ game for 1-2 groups of players of players of age 13 and above.
The first item on the left of the next row is a board game. The instructions for the game read “Go with Holmes and Watson via London Railways to the locations of their greatest cases A Study in Scarlet, The Yellow Face and 10 others. Once there, try to deduce the picture chosen by your opponent from a set of 24 Paget and Steele illustrations from the original Strand and Collier’s magazines where the Sherlock Holmes tales first appeared.” Next to this is another a board game, titled “The Master Detective Game”.
The bottom row starts with a set of three toby jugs in the shape of Sherlock Holmes’ face. The first one is slightly larger than the other two but they all +show Holmes wearing a green deerstalker hat.
Next is a small wooden hinged souvenir box from the Reichenbach Falls which holds‘Water from the Reichenbach Falls near Meiringen 1st May 1968’, a bar of chocolate, with a label showing a line drawing profile of Sherlock Holmes and ‘Sherlock Holmes, Meiringen’; and another bottle on which it is only possible to read part of the label: ‘…soil is kept forever…drift of spray 1st May at the (Reichenbach) Falls – Meiringen.
The final items are a collection of mugs, in assorted colours, commemorating and promoting a wide range of events including the erection of a Sherlock Holmes statue in Edinburgh, The publication of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Holmes' rooms at 221b Baker Street.
