'The Adventure of the Creeping Man' was published in 1927 as part of The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle's final collection of Sherlock Holmes stories. It is Holmes' last official case as a consulting detective before his retirement to the Sussex Downs to keep bees. The tale sees our great detective trying to solve the case of the internationally-renowned Professor Presbury, whose curious behaviour has been concerning and frightening his friends and family in equal measure.
The manuscript of this story became part of the Arthur Conan Doyle Collection, Lancelyn Green Bequest, in April 2009, having been bequeathed by Dame Jean Conan Doyle. It is being published, for the first time, through a partnership between Portsmouth City Council and Winchester University Press. The volume features the facsimile manuscript and a transcribed, annotated version of the story. There is also a new introductory essay that examines the critical history of the tale and the details of the handwritten manuscript, as well as providing a short history of Conan Doyle's time in Portsmouth - the city that is now the custodian of Lancelyn Green's Collection.
