This photograph of Conan Doyle and his brother, Innes was taken in 1890.
Innes joined Arthur in Southsea in 1882 when he was nine years old. Impressed and enthralled by the hustle and bustle, and the military and naval displays, he declared that Portsmouth was his 'favourite place ever'. He became a pupil at Hope House, where Rudyard Kipling had also been a pupil. When he was twelve, Innes was sent to boarding school in Richmond, Yorkshire.
After he left school, Innes joined the army, and was later awarded the DSO (Distinguished Service Order) for his bravery on the Western Front in the First World War. Sadly Innes contracted Spanish flu and died in Belgium on 19 February 1919.
