The Conan Doyle Collection's Detective volunteers worked extremely hard on new ideas for their Summer of Sherlock make and take workshops which were delivered in libraries across the city. The work produced became scenery for the Puppet Theatre performance, "The Case of the Missing Dinosaur".
This years theme was the Lost World. Our detectives were busy testing out designs, materials and techniques to bring dinosaurs and Lost World landscapes to life.
The Detectives visited five city libraries this summer delivering eight fun filled workshops, including feather and leaf making, wax crayon rubbing and dinosaur themed craft. One of the most popular activities was using the mosaic technique to create dinosaur pictures.
The Make and Take workshops also gave families the opportunity to make props and scenery for The Detectives puppet theatre performance "The case of the missing dinosaur", which took place at the "Summer Reading Challenge Winners" event at Southsea Castle on Sunday the 24th of September 2023. Families learned more about Conan Doyle's legacy to the city, his many talents and interests and his less famous stories.
The Detectives explained how they chose the theme of dinosaurs and jungle themed activities to raise awareness of Doyle's "Lost World" book and the Professor Challenger series discussing other stories such as "The Poison Belt".
You can find more activites we held this summer on this topic on our Open Art Exhibition page.
